All motorcycles are subject to the occasional surface scratch or blemish. It's a fact of motorcycle ownership. But now you can easily remove scratches and restore the paint in your own garage using a common household drill. The 3M Scratch Removal System saves you the cost of professional paint repair and you'll get the same results because this is the same process used by professionals!
The 3M Scratch Removal System includes:
Step 1 - Sanding with the 3000 Grit Abrasive Square
Spray water onto the green/gray side of the abrasive square and onto the area to be repaired. Use the abrasive square to sand the area of the scratch, working in no more than a 4 x 4 inch section. Use light to medium pressure.
A white slurry will form as you sand the scratch. Wipe the area frequently with a paper towel to determine if the scratch has been removed. Check your work every 10 seconds. Look at the area from all angles to make sure the scratch has been removed. Wipe the area with a clean, dry towel.
Step 2 - Compounding using the Disc Pad Holder, Purple Compounding Pad, and 1 oz. 3M Rubbing Compound
Attach the Disc Pad Holder on your electric drill. Attach and center the Purple Compounding Pad onto the Disc Pad Holder. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount of 3M Rubbing Compound onto the purple pad. Smear the compound over the work area before turning on the drill. Buff at light to medium pressure, extending the buffing area about a pad width beyond the repair spot. Buff in up and down, side to side motions. (Note: Use caution around door handles and at the edges of panels where paint may be thinner.) Reduce pressure as the compound dries. Repeat this step if any sanding scratches are still visible. Wipe off the area with a clean, dry towel.
The purple compounding pad can be rinsed out with water and reused.
Step 3 - Polishing with the Black Polishing Pad and 1 oz. 3M Scratch Remover
Remove the purple pad from the Disc Pad Holder and replace it with the Black Polishing Pad. Squeeze a quarter-size amount of 3M Scratch Remover onto the pad. Spread the polish over the repair area with the drill turned off. Polish the repair area using light to medium pressure at a comfortable drill speed. You only need to apply enough pressure to compress the surface of the waffle pad. Work in side to side, up and down motions until the entire area is polished. Reduce pressure as the polish dries and desired shine is achieved. Repeat application if necessary. Buff by hand with a clean, dry microfiber towel.
The black polishing pad can be rinsed out with water and reserved for future use.
Step 4 - Protect
Use one of 3M's high quality sealants or waxes to seal the newly repaired paint. This step is very important since the paint is bare and vulnerable to the elements. 3M recommends 3M Performance Finish Synthetic Wax for its durability and deep shine.
That's it! You're done. After using the 3M Scratch Removal System, your motorcycle will look as good as new. The best part is that all the tools included in this kit can be used again and again.
